Getting In and Around Providence

T.F. Green Airport is the major airport serving Providence. It is located about 6 miles of Providence (south). This airport offers over 100 flights every day through major carriers, including Delta, American Airlines, Southwest, Condor, United Airlines, JetBlue, TACV- Cabo Verde Airlines, SATA-Azores Airlines and New England Airlines.

Getting to and from Airport: Numerous options are available to get to and from T.F. Green Airport like cab, airport taxi, rental cars and even, buses.

InterlinkInterLink hub is available at the Green Airport. It offers passengers with several transportation options, plus is an eco-friendly transit option. It provides public transit service, rental cars, bus and rail service to Boston, Providence and beyond. 

By Cab: The ride from the airport to downtown Providence is of about 15 minutes and the fare ranges between $28 and $32.

Another airport serving Providence is the Boston Logan International Airport. It is the closest international airport to the city featuring non-stop flights from over 100 destinations worldwide. It is about 50 miles from Providence and offers many transportation options from Boston, including rail and bus service.

Getting to Providence by Boston Logan International Airport-

By bus: RIPTA buses run from airport to other parts of the city. Bus no. 20 goes to downtown Providence, Bus 14 goes to/from Kennedy Plaza and connects to East Greenwich, Newport and Narrangansett. To know the bus fare and route information, check the official website of RIPTA.

By Car: It takes about one hour from Logan International Airport to Providence. Take Interstate-95 south.

By Public Transit: MBTA offers commuter rail service to Providence. Silver Line bus/BRT Line goes to South station and from there hop on the MBTA commuter train that travels to Downtown Providence.

MBTA Commuter Rail: Providence has well-connected train system to Boston and beyond. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) offer commuter rail service that connects Boston to downtown Providence and to the Green Airport.  Providence is connected to Boston via commuter rail line, called as Providence/Stoughton line, with several stops along the way. The fare for one-way trip is $10.

Amtrak: Amtrak offers train service to Providence. Several Amtrak trains run through Providence. Amtrak running between Boston and NY City stops at Providence, Westerly and Kingston.

Getting to Providence by Car

Conveniently located between New York and Boston, Providence is easily navigable by car. The major interstate highway in Providence is Interstate-95. If travelling from New York or Boston, take Interstate-95. Downtown Providence is located off of I-95.

Getting to Providence by Bus

Providence is a perfect hub-and-spoke place. Several charter and bus services provide transportation from Providence to other points via the Northeast.

Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) offers bus service across the whole of Rhode Island, including Providence, with the central station at Kennedy Plaza. The fare for bus is $2.00 and an additional $.50 for a two-hour transfer to travel with other buses. Day and monthly passes are also available.

Bonanza Bus Lines: Bonanza Bus Lines travels to several areas on the east coast. The ticket for bonanza bus ca=n be taken online or from Kennedy Plaza. This bus line is managed by Peter Pan and connects T.F. Green Airport and Peter Pan to South Station, Boston and Logan International Airport, Boston.

Greyhound Bus: Greyhound bus service is available in Providence. From Providence to Boston, NY City, Connecticut and beyond is available. Greyhound bus takes about 70 minutes to reach Boston, 4-5 hours to NY City, 1 hour to Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

Newport-Providence water taxi: Ferry service/water taxi from Newport, RI to Providence is available. It takes around 1 hour and 25 minutes from Newport to Providence. The cost for adults is $14.00, children below 5- free, and for disabled and seniors- $12.00.

Block Island Ferry: If you wish to travel to Block Island from Providence, take a taxi or bus to Narragansett, Rhode Island and then ferry to Block Island, RI.

Rhode Island Public Transit offers bus service in Providence. You can travel around Providence in just a few dollars via RIPTA. It is a low-cost bus service in the entire Rhode Island.   The fare is $1.50.   RIPTA also runs a tourist trolley in Downtown Providence, called as the Providence LINK. This tourist trolley offers access to Providence attractions, restaurants, historic sites, shopping, entertainment, hotels and more.
